The perfect brew

A good friend turned me on to this contraption - the Aerobie AeroPress

Throw out your nasty drip machine, chuck the french press, and even give away your Keurig to a less-loved family member. For under $25 on Amazon, this thing creates the best cup of coffee you've ever had. Period.

Ridiculously easy to use and clean, the only consumable (besides coffee of course) are simple micro-filter discs. The AeroPress comes with 350 and additional packs of 350 are only $5.

Build quality is excellent, though the "eco" packaging can be a little surprising. The AeroPress comes in a plain brown box with no internal packaging - just 6 foam-wrapped parts and an instruction sheet. Even the instructions are spartan; not mentioning a couple of the bits, but it's not tough to figure out.

To brew a cup, just toss a micro-filter disc in the base and screw it to the bottom of the press. Rest it on your coffee cup. Use the provided scoop to measure in the desired amount of fine ground coffee (the included funnel helps here), and pour in hot water. The funny "T" piece is actually a stirrer that's perfectly designed to avoid damaging to the micro-filter. Stir for 10 seconds, wet the rubber piston on the top half of the press, insert and press gently for about 30 seconds or so to drive the coffee into the cup. Top off your cup with hot water to taste (the AeroPress makes a strong brew!)

Cleanup is just as easy - unscrew the base, push the piston through to drive out the puck of used coffee, and simply rinse all parts with warm water.

With all the complex, wallet-breaking contraptions out there for brewing a cup of joe, it's refreshing to discover that simple and superb engineering trumps all. This is the cup of coffee you've been looking for.
